i think flickr is a great tool for exploring and learning (just don't let your kids roam free - there are some not so nice pictures out there). my daughter and i are reading Burgess Animal Book for Children (we read Burgess Bird Book for Children last year) and at the end of each chapter we go look up the animal in flickr. i've also used it for other exploring "what does hawaii look like?", "what does aurora borealis look like?", etc.

oh my, yes, you are right about flickr not being safe for children to roam at will.

jack’s been working on a cat project this year and we go to flickr to find pictures of the big cats — and unlike wikipedia or other sources, there is often a great personal story to go along with the photo, as they’ve been taken by zookeepers or peace corps volunteers or etc.

i usually use wikipedia as my e-field guide, but i’ll be looking at flickr more — thank you! :^)

Wow! They're just so achingly, awe-inspiringly beautiful. Thanks Sarah :-)

And thanks for the suggestion to use Flickr - I've only recently started properly exploring it, and it's an amazing resource. I'd been looking at eco-crafts, but great idea to use it for nature projects.
