« What’s in your field bag? »

Click on the photo to see the annotated photo on Flickr.

This is my son’s road-tripping bag from a couple years ago; we haven’t photographed our field bags yet!

If you would like to participate in a show-and-tell and share your field bag contents, either e-mail me your photos (500 pixels wide preferably), put them in the Heywood’s Meadow flickr group, or send me a link to your blog post that shares your bag, and we’ll do a round-up next week!

Kids, grown-ups, doesn’t matter — we just want to peek into your field bag! ;^)

Thanks for stopping by my blog, Lori! I'm very much enjoying yours... it's making me long for spring so i can get out there again! Ah, the frozen tundra that I call home....

This is great. I have that Spanish pocket guide too! Looking forward to seeing what's in the field bags!

Speaking of road trips: Our trip out here to Nova Scotia took us 9 days. I did not know what to expect from the kids (2 & 5) but I did know that they were going to need some fresh material each day...so I sewed 10 bags (1 extra just in case) and filled each bag with books, activities and novel snacks for each day... by day 3 they were asking "what's in today's bag?" It was a lifesaver for such a long trip with the little ones.

Thank you for stopping by my blog! You have a great thing going here, as well as your other one! I'm looking forward to returning for some fun ideas to employ with my two youngsters for school.

Funny, both my children have their little backpacks they take along whenever we go for an outing, but somehow I never thought of them as "field bags". Perhaps that's because the contents tend to change so much depending on the outing. I may have to rethink that a bit.

Oooo, I covet that field bag! :) Love new pencil cases and new notebooks. I see The Westing Game which I have not read yet - have you? And what is that underneath it?

elle, thank you! :^)

dawn, what a fantastic idea. when my boys were younger we took a trip and i wrapped up a bunch of dollar store items like little presents .. then when they would reach peak boredom i would let them unwrap one and it would energize and entertain them for much longer than i’d dared hope. ;^)

now that they are older, they have become pretty adept at packing their own bags to entertain themselves .. i’m always taken aback by some things that they pack, but those little plastic dinos up above entertained them for *hours*. they made a million little 30-second video movies of them with my camera. ;^)

boondock ma, yes, my boys take a bag along pretty much everywhere we go as well. their field bags are made up for hiking and nature journaling specifically, so they have some specialized content. :^) thank you re: your kind comments about my blogs!

gift of green, that particular bag underwent a pretty serious chocolate milkshake incident and was never quite the same. ;^) re: the westing game, i have read it, though i can’t say it’s a particular favorite. if you click on the picture, it takes you to my flickr and everything is annotated! :^) i love new pencils and notebooks, too. .. mm. i love to get a new little notebook for each trip we take!

jane, me, too! and i hope alice recuperates quickly and anne doesn’t catch it!! send her my love. xo

All weekend I thought about what we take out with us: camera, bird books, bird cards, collecting bag. I really ruminated on what I could add and how did I want to shape the next season of being outside?
And then I had an experience today that made me realize, as I often do a little late in the game, that this is not about stuff. Not if I am not giving the space needed. So I posted on my field bag - not literal - but this idea of the field bag, combined with events this week, provoked awesome introspection and action for me...

such a beautiful post, and fits in so well with what i wrote about today @ camp creek -- white space!

the field bag makes something possible .. we're being very intentional about what we're about to do. we're bringing the things we need so it can be the experience we want.

i love the idea of a psychic field bag .. that we bring along our inner intentions, too .. we're preparing these physical objects so that we can rise above the physical; we're insuring against hunger, frustration, etc., so that we can be at peace because we have what we need.

when i write about children extending one another's work through collaborating on projects, this is exactly what i mean .. you took my initial idea and extended it so beautifully, and now it is returned to me and my mind is full of new thoughts! :^)

Here's a link to a post about our field bag. Looking forward to seeing others' field bags for further inspiration. And I was very moved by Amy's post about packing a field bag with more than just animate objects....everyone should read her dawdle factor post in full (link from her comment).

Here's what's in our bag now:
